Spanish national Pich-Aguilera Maria has paid a Ksh 1 million fine following her arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with an ivory bangle weighing 0.025g.

The 50-year-old was traveling from Nairobi to Dar e Salaam by Precision Air and was arraigned at the JKIA Law Court located in the Cargo Section near KAA head office.

After pleading guilty to the charge of illegal possession of ivory, she was fined Ksh1 million rather than serve a 12 month prison sentence before continuing on her journey to Dar es Salaam.

Her arrest comes less than a week after a French woman Laazibi Amal, who was transiting through JKIA from France to Dzaoudzi Island, was arrested with an ivory bangle weighing 0.85g.

She also pleaded guilty to the charges and was fined Ksh1 million with the court allowing her to access the bank in the airport to get the fine rather than surrender to the court along with her passport to serve a 12 month prison stretch.

Last year, 52-year-old Zhang Ninighua, was arrested at JKIA with two elephant ivory bangles weighing 150g concealed in her check-in bag. The items were located by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) canine section while the Chinese national was on transit from Nigeria to Guangzhou, China.
