Yesterday, outgoing British High Commissioner Nic Hailey paid farewell visits in Laikipia.
Joined by Department for International Development country head, Julius Court, Mr Hailey met with Defence Advisor Brigadier Mark Thornhill to discuss how the UK is partnering with Laikipia County on a range of issues ranging from local security to development.
The talks, which included Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi, discussed the UK’s partnership with Laikipia County which has included support for girls’ education, helping develop value chains for livestock and encouraging private sector investment to create jobs.
Mr Hailey and Mr Court were also briefed by the Nanyuki Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO) on how they are being supported by UKaid and the Kenya Markets Trust (KMT) to deliver better water supply and sanitation services for local communities.
With the help of UK support, NAWASCO is now using new technology, including a mobile based metre reading, billing and payment system, which is used to track water use and offer consumers better access to clean water.
The new technology also helps identify leaks quickly which reduce contamination and wastage.
