Safaricom have appointed former CEO Michael Joseph in an acting capacity following the death of Guyanese-born British businessman Bob Collymore yesterday.
Mr Joseph, who is current chairman of the board of Kenya Airways, will hold the position until the Safaricom Board makes a permanent appointment.
In a statement, Safaricom Company Secretary Kathryne Maundu said: “The board is confident that during this transition, Mr Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees.”
The 67 year old joined the Safaricom board on September 8, 2008 and is employed by Vodafone Group Services Limited as its Director of Mobile Money.
He is also Vodafone’s Strategic Advisor appointed to the Boards of Vodacom Group South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania, Vodacom Mozambique and Safaricom Limited in Kenya.
Mr Joseph was the Safaricom CEO from July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya. By the time he retired in November 2010 he had steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers.
