Next generation SMS replacement RCS (Rich Communication Services) could be coming to Kenya sooner than expected after Google announced it was taking charge of the rollout for the service following the slow response from carriers.
Later this month, Android users in the UK and France will be able to opt in to RCS Chat services provided directly by Google instead of waiting for cellphone carriers to do it.
As Google rolls their service out to more countries, it should eventually mean that RCS will become universally available for all Android users, including those in Kenya.
Google may also be considering offering end to end encryption, which is made easier if the company itself provides the service, with the product management director overseeing Android Messages, Sanaz Ahari telling The Verge: “We fundamentally believe that communication, especially messaging, is highly personal and users have a right to privacy for their communications. And we’re fully committed to finding a solution for our users.”
