The Kenya based ex-fiancée of a Scottish soldier who is fighting for life after a horror assault in Magaluf reportedly broke down in tears after hearing about the attack.
According to the Daily Record, 23-year-old Bethany Bancroft, who is currently serving in Kenya, was engaged to 22-year-old Glasgow-born Sarah Ann Garrity.
While Sarah was critically ill in hospital after allegedly being glassed in the neck, Bethany’s mum Barbara Nield told the newspaper that her daughter called her in a distressed state on hearing the news. Later reports say Sarah has made a remarkable recovery and is expected to be allowed home for Easter.
The 62-year-old from Fleetwood, Lancashire, said that although her daughter and Sarah were not together anymore, they remained very close.
It has been alleged that Sarah was glassed in the neck by another servicewoman during a nightclub brawl at Bananas in Magaluf, Majorca over the weekend.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found Glasgow-born Sarah lying in a pool of blood. They rushed her to the intensive care unit at Son Espases Hospital in the island’s capital, Palma and medics later confirmed she was in a critical condition after losing a large amount of blood.
19-year-old Sydney Cole, from the Adjutant General Corps, appeared in court in Palma on Monday for the attack and is expected to be further questioned by a judge. She is currently being held in Palma jail.
A British Army spokeswoman said: “We are aware of an incident involving two off-duty soldiers in Spain. An investigation by the local Spanish police is ongoing, and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
