British entrepreneur launches business inspired by her time in Kenya

A young entrepreneur has launched a discount card with the goal of showcasing black British businesses and encouraging customers to engage with them.

25-year-old Khalia Ismain launched Jamii in August 2016 and the card works in a similar way to the Time Out card, with customers signing up and buying one for £14.95 which gets them a year of discounts from a wide range of black businesses.

The inspiration for the initiative came from Khalia’s time in Kenya after graduating from university. She was working in micro-businesses in the country and she decided to call her business Janii after the Swahili word for ‘community’.
