Continuing his visit to Kenya, Matthew Rycroft, the Permanent Secretary of the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) yesterday visited the recently opened maternity unit at the Kerio Health Center in Turkana.

The unit, which was funded by DFID and implemented by UNICEF Kenya, targets  the most vulnerable adolescent girls and mothers with essential maternal and newborn health services.

Commenting on his visit, Mr Rycroft said: “It is a tragedy that thousands of women die each year due to complications relating to pregnancy and childbirth. UKaid is working with the Government of Kenya and UNICEF to improve access to life-saving services and help stop preventable maternal and newborn deaths.”
