Irish Minister Pat Breen held a number of meetings and took part in side events during the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi yesterday.
As well as meeting Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Irish Minister held a bilateral meeting with Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri who was joined by Agriculture and Fisheries Principal Secretary Micheni Ntiba.
Discussions focused on the challenges and opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture as well as exploring possible collaborations between Ireland and Kenya to achieve a sustainable blue economy.
Following the meeting, the pair were keynote speakers at a side event during the Blue Economy Conference.
The side event, titled “The role of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in ending hunger and securing food supply to promote good health and create wealth”, was sponsored by the Irish Embassy.
Later, Mr Breen took part in another side event, this time exploring employment, job creation and poverty eradication.
Yesterday afternoon, Minister Breen also held talks with Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives, Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.
During the meeting, he said that Kenya could learn plenty from Ireland in agriculture and value addition.
