Nic Hailey hosts Diwali celebrations in Nairobi

Tonight at his residence in Nairobi, UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey has been celebrating Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali which this year falls on Wednesday (7 November).

Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations and on this day, devotees pay their respects to Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi.

It comes two days before Diwali which is a Hindu festival of lights celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere (spring in southern hemisphere).

One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.”
