Kaya Collective, an international group of Nairobi based musicians who play a fusion of afro-funk, soul, hip-hop, rock n roll, reggae and jazz, fronted by British expat Matthew Swallow, will be lighting up the Purdy Arms’ terrace this Friday night (13 July).

Former teacher Matthew, who studied at Cardiff University, set up ADA Creative Studios and brought the whole band together. He is seeking to develop Kaya Collective into a full alternative orchestra.

They take their influence from multiple continents and combine percussion, brass and vocals to create a truly unique sound and live experience.

Along with lead vocalist Matthew, the rest of the band members are:

  • Mbaluka, a master of Kenyan funk and boogie, yet diverse enough to move the band in every direction on bass.
  • Lead guitarist Charif Megarbane, a Lebanese multi-instrumentalist and producer of over 60 albums under 4 aliases, whose creative flow and afro melodies provide the band with much inspiration.
  • Fellow Lebanese versatile multi-instrumentalist Fouad Juez, a rhythm guitarist, drummer and bass player multi-instrumentalist, described as the rock of the band, offering expertise in many areas and heavy disco bass lines.
  • Denis Malesi, Action Jackson and Joel on horns are also members of the Salvation Army and the National Youth Orchestra.
