UK High Commissioner discusses health sector issues with Kenyan Cabinet Secretary

Yesterday, the UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey met with Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki to discuss a wide range of health sector issues.

Tweeting after the talks, Mr Hailey said: “Thank you Sicily Kariuki for good talks today on health sector in Kenya and UK support for realising the dream of universal coverage for all Kenyans.”

Sicily Kanini Kariuki has served as the Cabinet Secretary for Health, since 2018.

Immediately before she was appointed to her present position, she served as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, from December 2015 until January 2018.

Born in Tumaini Village  in present-day Nyandarua County, she has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) in conjunction with Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and Regulation from Michigan State University in the United States.

She has enjoyed a wide-ranging career in the business world, including as an officer of the Kenya Investment Authority, and as chief executive officer of Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya, before serving as the Managing Director and CEO of “Tea Board of Kenya”.

In addition, she has also served as the Principal Secretary, in the Department of Agriculture, in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

In December 2015, she was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, a position she held until January 2018, when she was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Health.
