Gathimba Edwards Foundation fundraiser Mat Northcroft has completed the North East 250 in a record time of 17 hours 20 mins which included 13 hours and 12 mins of cycling.

Setting off at 4am early on Saturday morning, Mat completed his epic 252 mile journey with 13,800ft of climbing at 9.20pm to a roar of cheers from awaiting friends and family.

Mat is also well on his way to hitting his £1,500 target which will be used to change the lives of Christine and her 7 children in Kenya who currently live in the most cramped conditions the Aberdeen based charity say they have ever seen.

“They sleep in this mud hut by the side of the road with such little space that they cannot lie down flat – some of them have to have their backs up against the wall to sleep. They previously lived in the forest but were evicted by the Government and then put on a waiting list for a home. They were 10th on the list but when it came to their turn the local area Chief stole the land and gave it to his son, leaving them to remain in these desperate and dangerous conditions.”
