The British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Sarah Cooke and Liverpool legend Sami Hyypia are expected to attend today’s Standard Chartered Cup soccer tournament at the Gymkhana sports ground in Dar es Salaam.
Tanzanian Ministry for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe will officiate at the ‘knockout’ contest which will feature 32 teams, with the winner awarded a ticket to feature in the Standard Chartered Cup tournament scheduled to be held in Liverpool this September.
Speaking yesterday after arriving in Tanzania, Finnish-born former Liverpool star Sami Hyypia said: “I am very happy to be part of the tournament, and got the opportunity to witness talented players from various local clubs. I hope it will be very competitive and exciting.”
Hyypia, who Sami led Liverpool to Champions League glory during his 10 years at the club, added that he believes there are great opportunities for young talented players from Tanzania and other African countries to feature in different premier league matches across Europe.
He explained that since the arrival in 1995 of the Ghanaian striker Anthony ‘Tony’ Yeboah at Leeds United, who were at the time playing in the Premier League, there has been an increase of African players in various European leagues. He highlighted Liverpool players Egyptian Mohamed Salah and the Senegalese Sadio Mane to illustrate his point.
