Spurs’ midfielder Victor Wanyama has helped one of his countrymen to win a record-breaking Ksh230 million sports betting jackpot, after the Kenyan footballer scored in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

The lucky winner was 31-year-old Kibera shopkeeper Gordon Opiyo. He took home the biggest jackpot in Kenyan history after correctly guessing the outcome of 17 matches in different European leagues.

Sunday’s controversial draw was the result which clinched his win.

“I was happy when the Kenyan national football team captain Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane scored the two equalising goals for Tottenham in the dying minutes of the second half,” said Opiyo. ”I had stopped watching the game when Liverpool went one up.”

The giant jackpot was paid out by Kenyan betting firm SportPesa. This isn’t the first large jackpot paid out by the company. Last May they awarded another jackpot worth Ksh 221 million.

Smartphone betting applications, such as Sport Pesa’s, have made online betting more accessible to a new generation of gamblers.
