The British Council and Premier League partnership, Premier Skills, which provides community football coaching round the world as well as free English language materials for teachers and learners has spent the last couple of days in the Kakuma Camp, bringing the ‘beautiful game’ to refugees currently living there.

The English Premier League’s Aston Villa generously supported this initiative and donated the distinctive claret and blue kits for the teams to train in.

Over the two days, refugee coaches were trained up and were told they would be a positive example for their team mates in their community.

Premier Skills

Premier Skills is the British Council’s international partnership with the English Premier League operating in 25 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas from Afghanistan to Zambia.

It draws upon the Premier League’s global appeal and expertise in delivering community programmes in the UK, alongside the British Council’s global network, track record of delivery and world class expertise in English.

Since it began in 2007, 2,300 coaches and referees have been trained, who in turn have reached a further 500,000 young people. 6,000 teachers have received training in the use of the Premier Skills English materials, with 3.5 million views of the materials online.

Through Premier Skills, young people, including the most vulnerable in society, are given opportunities to become better integrated into their local communities, to develop their skills for employability and raise their self-esteem.

Premier Skills English helps teachers and learners of English with free, compelling learning materials, drawing on football-based content from the most exciting football league in the world.
