Virginia McKenna reflects on Born Free’s 50th Anniversary

To celebrate Born Free’s 50th Anniversary, the Born Free Foundation have posted a video online showing British actress Virginia McKenna OBE and her son Will Travers OBE reflecting on the past half century.

The video opens with vintage shots from the Royal Premiere of Born Free (1966), for which the actress was nominated for a best actress Golden Globe. In the shots you will see the Queen as well as a number of Hollywood A-Listers including Woody Allen.

The 1966 British movie starred McKenna and her husband Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, a real-life couple who raised Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lion cub, to adulthood, and released her into the wilderness of Kenya.

The experience of making the film led the couple to become active supporters for wild animal rights as well as the protection of their natural habitat, eventually establishing the Born Free Foundation in 1984.

The video also covers the setting up of the Foundation before bringing us up to date for this 2016’s #YearOfTheLion!
