The Metropolitan Police have reported that a man and a woman have been arrested at London Heathrow Airport in connection with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The 49 woman was arrested after arriving on a flight from Nairobi and an eight-year-old girl in her company was taken into protective care. Although the 45-year-old man was not on the flight, he was also arrested at the airport.

Both are currently being questioned on suspicion of assisting a non-UK person to carry out FGM overseas after concerns were raised by a south London school when one of their pupils failed to attend school and authorities suspected they had been taken to Somalia.

The arrests were made following the issuing of a FGM Prevention Order to officers from the Camberwell Child Abuse Investigation Team.
