The director of Iron Man 3 and Nice Guys is hoping to reboot cult British spy show The Avengers as a brand new television series.

Shane Black has teamed up with writing partner Fred Dekker to create a scripted TV pilot which could potentially reboot the classic ITV show which was originally broadcast between 1961 and 1969.

The Avengers followed the adventures of British secret agent John Steed (played by Patrick Macnee) with a succession of intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and Tara King (Linda Thorson).

The show moved to the big screen in 1998 with Ralph Fiennes taking on the role of John, with Uma Thurman starring as his partner Emma. Despite former James Bond Sean Connery appearing in the film as a villain, the movie flopped at the box office.

Speaking about the reboot to The Dark Side Magazine, Black said: “It’s The Avengers, with John Steed and Emma Peel. We’re setting it in Britain in the 60’s, and our approach is The Ipcress File meets Doctor Who.”
